Summary

'Oh, well, everyone has to die sometime。 I never worry over people dying。。。'

When socialite Lucy Angkatell organises a weekend's entertainment at her English country house, The Hollow, it seems she has thought of everything: the capable butler, the requisite number of kitchen maids - in fact, the only thing she seems to have overlooked is the fact that most of her guests hate each other。

A far-from-warm welcome greets Hercule Poirot as he arrives for lunch。 Instead, a man lies dying by the swimming pool, as a gun sinks slowly to the bottom。。。

'This is Agatha Christie at her best。'

Spannend verstrickter Fall bei dem das Miträtseln Spaß gemacht hat! :)

I find the characters in this book incredibly terrible, even if it was planned that way。 We don't get a lot of Poirot in this one, he does appear in some chapters。 Mostly the book gives the prespective of other characters, which as I mentioned before are not the best。 I find the characters in this book incredibly terrible, even if it was planned that way。 We don't get a lot of Poirot in this one, he does appear in some chapters。 Mostly the book gives the prespective of other characters, which as I mentioned before are not the best。 。。。more

The book felt extremely slow and the identity of murderer seemed obvious from the start。 However, the thing that most hindered my ability to enjoy this was my extreme annoyance with every character in this book singing the praises of the most selfish, emotionally abusive jerk I’ve ever encountered in a Christie novel。 The repugnant scoundrel deserved far worse, in my opinion。 And Poirot was hardly involved in the story at all。

Rather a juicy murder mystery。 A really well done who dunnit in lush setting of a beautiful manor。 An interesting ensemble of colorful characters will not throw Hercule Poirot from the scent of the real killer。Quite a few red herrings on the way insured I was intrigued and surprised at the revelation。 Well done murder mystery from Christie。

Listened to this narrated by Hugh Fraser。 He is excellent in all the recordings and I can’t say enough about this marvellous book。 Poirot doesn’t even come into it until a good amount of time。 Wonderful!

Una resolución compleja ante un caso teatral en un asesinato sencillo。 Increíble, como cada una de las novelas de Agatha。

This story epitomizes the category of “country house murders” that many many of Christie’s books fall into。 Readers are introduced to a variety of characters gathered at a home, The Hollow, for a relaxing weekend。 Complicated relationships raise the tension, culminating in a murder。 Poirot makes an appearance as a summer neighbor who is invited to join the house party。 Results are finally reached after a struggle by some of the guests to protect one of their number。I first read this as a play of This story epitomizes the category of “country house murders” that many many of Christie’s books fall into。 Readers are introduced to a variety of characters gathered at a home, The Hollow, for a relaxing weekend。 Complicated relationships raise the tension, culminating in a murder。 Poirot makes an appearance as a summer neighbor who is invited to join the house party。 Results are finally reached after a struggle by some of the guests to protect one of their number。I first read this as a play of the same title (released 5 or so years after the book)。 Poirot was not included in the play and as the story dealt more with the psychology of the murder than the mechanics, was not such a loss。 。。。more

Prodigious!

This is my 3rd book from Ms Christie, and I’m very disappointed。 Unfortunately the story was not what I expected。 This was a very boring one。 No emotion, no excitement, no nothing, just a plain reading。

Not one of Christie's best since some things didn't always make a lot of sense, but it is a different and interesting approach for a Poirot mystery that is more of a psychological thriller。 The theme addresses life's frustrations and how people are trapped in situations that are almost impossible to get out of。 Manipulation is the strategy used to cope mostly by the female characters。 A fascinating premise but its execution is a bit bemusing。 The standout element is character Lady Lucy Angkatell Not one of Christie's best since some things didn't always make a lot of sense, but it is a different and interesting approach for a Poirot mystery that is more of a psychological thriller。 The theme addresses life's frustrations and how people are trapped in situations that are almost impossible to get out of。 Manipulation is the strategy used to cope mostly by the female characters。 A fascinating premise but its execution is a bit bemusing。 The standout element is character Lady Lucy Angkatell, an original, humorous, and mysteriously wacko personality。 Published in 1946 this contains racial stereotypes and slang use of the "n" word in a couple places。 。。。more

This murder mystery will keep you guessing till the end。 You will be surprised in the end。

My favourite setting for a Christie, complete with the familiar cocktail of suspects and their various degrees of perfectly imperfect humanity while Poirot gently tiptoes on the very peripherals of the story。 It may be a bit too easy to get PART of the great reveal right, but surely not all of it。。。so there's that too。 My favourite setting for a Christie, complete with the familiar cocktail of suspects and their various degrees of perfectly imperfect humanity while Poirot gently tiptoes on the very peripherals of the story。 It may be a bit too easy to get PART of the great reveal right, but surely not all of it。。。so there's that too。 。。。more

Boring, not that much intriguing and too simple。

Great misdirection。 A good solid example of classic Christie。

[Really 2。5 stars]Easily my least favorite Poirot novel so far。 Poirot doesn't have any sidekicks to be humorously superior to while they twit him about his vanity: instead, we get pages and pages about the victim and the suspects, as Christie tries to convince us that what makes the murder so tragic is that somehow the victim was much more alive than anyone else。 For instance, we are told that the fact that Henrietta, a sculptor, works through her grief in her sculpture somehow means that she's [Really 2。5 stars]Easily my least favorite Poirot novel so far。 Poirot doesn't have any sidekicks to be humorously superior to while they twit him about his vanity: instead, we get pages and pages about the victim and the suspects, as Christie tries to convince us that what makes the murder so tragic is that somehow the victim was much more alive than anyone else。 For instance, we are told that the fact that Henrietta, a sculptor, works through her grief in her sculpture somehow means that she's not truly grieving: the rest of the psychological insights offered have a similarly low level of credibility。 Except, of course, for those bearing directly on the crime and its solution, which are clever as always。 But there's not nearly enough of that to justify this being a hundred pages longer than classics like "Lord Edgware Dies" or "The ABC Murders"。 Not unreadable, but much closer than I would have thought a Poirot book could come。 。。。more

For a book written in 1946, the Jewish stereotypes are pretty bad, plus there a dessert called "a nigger in his shirt"--an actual dessert! The title "The Hollow" is from Tennyson's Maud。 I found the character's motive for murder not particularly convincing and found myself wanting to rewrite the ending。 For a book written in 1946, the Jewish stereotypes are pretty bad, plus there a dessert called "a nigger in his shirt"--an actual dessert! Absolutely beautiful! I love the characterizations in this one & the mystery was perfect :)

Characters who weren't relevant to the plot were there, Poirot worked it out too quickly, and the payoff was not good。 I worked this one out。 The Hollow was a forgettable mystery for me。I liked Henrietta and Lucy though。 Characters who weren't relevant to the plot were there, Poirot worked it out too quickly, and the payoff was not good。 I worked this one out。 The Hollow was a forgettable mystery for me。I liked Henrietta and Lucy though。 。。。more

Drama, drama! Is it a very simple or a quite complicated crime? Emotional and melancholic。 Did not particularly enjoy this one。

"The Hollow" is one of Agatha Christie's more thought-provoking novels, although perhaps not as plot driven as many of her other mysteries。 Since reading I've been thinking; Who are the hollow? Nearly every character loves someone not for who they are but for the counterfeit image they've set up about that person。 Some characters love and long for a place - a place in the past, or a place similar to one they've loved。 Some are disillusioned。 Some learn to love truly。 And the artist seems to feel "The Hollow" is one of Agatha Christie's more thought-provoking novels, although perhaps not as plot driven as many of her other mysteries。 Since reading I've been thinking; Who are the hollow? Outdated and romanticised but hits the spot like a hot cup of coffee on a snowy afternoon。

This one wasn’t as great as the other Hercule Poirot novels were because of the way the story was written。 It was predictable and boring, but it could have been done well if the storyline had taken another approach。 I wouldn’t recommend this one。

Alverta

This pace kept up through all the book and I found the two main characters interesting。 A very entertaining book。
